Check Back Each Week…

To put a date with this message — it is 10:30 p.m. on 8/13/2017.  We are still adding content to this rebuild of our female pointing labs page so PLEASE…

Don’t Worry!  The dogs you know and love have not disappeared. As the next few weeks pass, we will add a new female dog each week to the list until it is complete.  Makes good Google food, and it keeps you checking back for your favorite dogs.

Thanks for taking the time to check us out!

The Heart & Soul of our Kennel — Female Pointing Labs

The female pointing labs we get the privilege of working with every day are the unsung heroes of the pointing lab business.  Why do I say that? Simple.  The dog business works just like the horse business.  When selling puppies, breeders sell them based on the accomplishments of the MALE or dogs. However, anyone who knows anything about genetics knows that it takes two parts to make one whole. Two great parents to make one hell of a puppy.

When selecting female pointing labs for our breeding program HPK is evaluating dogs for the following things:

  • Hunting & Pointing ability
  • Temperament
  • Overall Composition (Looks)
  • Mothering ability

Hunting & Pointing Ability:  our female pointing labs must hunt like hell, and must point.  There is just no way around this.  We are after hunting dogs.  That is what our kennel is all about.  If we don’t enjoy hunting over the female, we don’t breed it.  Furthermore, as one would expect, the dog must point.  We are, after all a pointing lab kennel.  IF the dog wont point – it seem silly to breed it.

Temperament:  90% of our customers are looking for one hell of a family companion and one hell of a hunting dog.  To rephrase – a dog that hunts well, but has an off-switch.  10% of our customers are after a dog that simply flat out goes – a dog that is more of a tool than a pet.  We can make both animals, but we need to start with the end in mind.  Breeding with purpose is a must. It is because of this fact that we evaluate the temperament of each female that comes through our doors.  If we don’t like the dog, we don’t breed the dog.

Overall Composition (Looks):   This one is easy, nobody likes an ugly dog.  Period.

Mothering Ability:  Have you ever raised a litter of puppies – or any animal for that matter – by hand?  We are here to tell you, it is not a fun thing to do.  At all. The female must be a good mother or she weill not fit into our program.

We truly feel that one of the things that today’s breeders often forget is that the female must have regular heat cycles, be as free of dystocia as possible, and LIKE being a mother dog.  Believe it or not, dogs are just like people.  Some are cut out to be mothers and others are not.
